Addressing the idea, “where do we truly begin as conscious human beings?” (also applies to the broader sense of aware consciousness ie. animals and plants etc.). This script aims to challenge the societal construct of labels in relation to identifying who we are and how we see ourselves. For example, when describing ourselves as individuals either to ourselves or others, the first thing that we may say is our profession, or who we are in relation to another being.

This project is based on the theory that the starting point of consciousness/awareness of any and all life forms remains consistent to one another while the “physical” aspect doesn’t necessarily have to be consistent. Life remains consistent; it evolves in a predictable manner, according to our laws of nature and scientific discovery.

The script introduces the idea of a consistent metaphysical aspect within each of us that runs through us all; we are all driven by some invisible force to have thoughts, instincts, emotions and reactions. There is something inside of us that leaves us when we die, this force is what animates us from birth and powers our minds. Some refer to this as the spirit, others a soul or even a little fragment of god/source itself.

The “illusion” of physical separation leads us to believe that there isn’t more than meets the eye. If we can not touch it, smell it, taste it, feel it, or hear it, according to our scientists, it is not measurable and therefore can not be considered to exist. Learning and reacting through mundane day to day experiences shape and transform our idea of who we are and feeds into the overall illusion.

Color & material

The color scheme is based on a deep space/deep sea scheme; heavily utilizing deep purples and blues with accents of “light” (bright) pops of color in orange and white. The colors represent the deep thought evoked by the script and the pops of light represent the spark of energy mentioned in the concept outline.

Materials include distorted shots of flashing lights at a concert as well as an overlay of ink/water footage provided by Jennifer Estridge.

Half the time you think you're thinking, you're actually listening.

Terence Mckenna

There is a light at the end of the tunnel. The problem is, that tunnel is in the back of your mind. And if you don't go to the back of your mind, you will never see the light at the end of the tunnel. Once you see it in yourself and others, spread it as a reality. God did not retire to the seventh heaven, God is some kind of lost continent in the human mind.

Terence Mckenna

Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is what these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched alchemical gold... This is what they understood. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it's a featherbed.

Terence Mckenna

You have to take seriously the notion that understanding the universe is your responsibility, because the only understanding of the universe that will be useful to you is your own understanding.

Terence McKenna

The syntactical nature of reality, the real secret of magic, is that the world is made of words. And if you know the words that the world is made of, you can make of it whatever you wish. The creative act is a letting down of the net of human imagination into the ocean of chaos on which we are suspended, and then attempt to bring out of it ideas.

Terence McKenna

If consciousness does not loom large in the future history of our species, then what the hell kind of future is it going to be?

Terence McKenna

Allow your mind to be open.

Allow your heart to be full.

Beam from within, radiantly.

Through the incorporation of cell and vector animation, as well as a sprinkle of film and determination, this project has captured a glimpse into the unknown. If only for a second, we allow ourselves to accept that not knowing the answer to an age old question is sometimes where the magic can be found.
